MASSIVE new mural honors vintage Hollywood characters

A new mural in downtown Miamisburg pays towering tribute to Hollywood legends.

The massive portraits — 35-feet tall — of John Wayne, Carrie Fisher, Paul Newman, Judy Garland and Charlie Chaplin, have been created on the north wall of the Plaza Theatre, 33 S. Main St.

Artist Erica Arndts, a Centerville native, said she wanted to “pay honor to vintage Hollywood characters,” as she put the finishing touches on the 100-foot-long mural Monday.

Arndts, who recently painted murals of a Dayton postcard and Winston Churchill on the Stratacache Tower in Dayton, chose to paint in a sepia tone with white highlights on a gold background to recreate the look of a classic photograph.

“People are kind of wowed by it,” said Doug Sorrell, who helped open the historic theater in 2015. “Dozens stop every day just to look at it and take pictures.”

The theater recently reopened after being temporarily closed during the pandemic.

The Shawshank Redemption is playing June 18 -20 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 21 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5.
