The Oregon District has a new sign — a really big one — and it is hard for AJ Bauer to keep his eyes off it.

“I love it,” Bauer said. “It looks great.”

The blue and black Key-Ads electronic billboard displaying the word "Oregon" sits on city controlled property behind Bauer's business, Smokin' Bar-B-Que, located at 200 E. Fifth St.

“It is pretty flashy,” Bauer said. “They are trying to introduce it as the entrance to the Oregon District and downtown.”

The billboard's colors coordinate with the mural Tiffany Clark, founder of the Mural Machine, created a few months ago along the railroad bridge spanning Fifth Street behind Bauer's restaurant, he said.

KAP Signs put the final touches on the 18-foot-by-40-foot sign Monday, Jan. 27, after six days of work, said Rick Massie, a foreman with the Dayton-based company formed 45 years ago.

That work included the lettering, decorations and lights that will illuminate  the letters spelling “Oregon” once electricity is installed, Massie said.

“They just have to hook it up,” he said of the electricity.

KAP signs has done other sign work for Key-Ads, including the company’s billboard at Third and Jefferson streets and its welcome to Beavercreek and welcome to Miami Twp signs.
