Columbus Zoo and Aquarium mourns death of Simba the sea lion

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced on Friday that one of its sea lions, a 14-year-old male named Simba, died while his care team was trying to treat him for a respiratory disease.

According to the announcement posted to social media, Simba’s keepers recently noticed him uncharacteristically stretching his neck, a sign that he was congested.

He was treated with antibiotics, decongestants, anti-inflammatory and pain medications, but his condition worsened, and he began to lose weight, then developed a cough. The zoo said that after consulting with other marine experts, the care team decided to evaluate Simba under anesthesia.

Sadly, within seconds of beginning the anesthesia, Simba went into cardiac arrest, which means that his health was severely compromised, and after trying to revive him, Simba died.

Simba arrived at the Columbus Zoo back in May with five other sea lions from a facility in China, which were joined by three more sea lions and four harbor seals.

He was known for his caramel color and unique vocalization, which his handlers described as his “baby bark.”

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said, “As anyone who has ever loved an animal knows, we experience many ‘ups’ during our time with them, but we also face extreme lows when that time ends.”

The zoo said it was monitoring the other sea lions' behavior to ensure they continue to do well.
