A preliminary investigation suggests the man was driving on a state route when another vehicle pulled up beside him.
“An occupant of that vehicle fired several times into the victim’s vehicle,” Chafee said.
The shooting caused the man to lose control of his car and drive off the road, coming to rest in a ditch against a fence.
Investigators said Saturday night that they were not sure whether the man’s injuries were caused by being shot or by the crash.
Police said they are looking for the alleged drive-by shooter.
