Dayton to close Keowee Street Monday to replace burst water main pipes

The City of Dayton has announced that starting on Monday, Keowee Street will be closed until further notice as the city works to replace the pipes involved in the recent water main break.

The water main broke on Monday afternoon at Keowee and Ottowa streets, flooding the roads and causing water outages and low water pressure downtown as well as in the South Park, Belmont and Grafton Hill neighborhoods and in various eastern parts of the city.

Without water service, restaurants and other businesses were forced to close their doors until water could be restored, and then residents in the area were put on a boil order.

The cause of the water main failure is still being investigated, but led to Dayton Water Director Mike Powell promising to focus on adding redundancies to its Ottowa water treatment plant in case there is another water emergency.
