Some parents of young children have stepped into uncharted territories as first-time educators during this “extended spring break.”

And F&S School and Office Supplies in Kettering wants to make sure all parents have the resources they need to keep their kids on track, even though many of us feel like there’s not much of a track at all right now.

Store owner Perry Hensley understands that many parents have become home-school teachers for the first time due to the coronavirus keeping kids home from pre-school, kindergarten and elementary schools. Despite the physical shop being closed, Hensley is keeping his phone line open for parents who want to order supplies over the phone.

Especially for pre-K through kindergarten and younger grade school students, Hensley said the Summer Bridge book series is an excellent way to keep primary education momentum going. The books include coverage on all core subjects, including reading, math and English.

“That’s what a lot of the parents will get when school is out and they are going through the summer and they want to keep them on refresher courses,” Hensley said. “What it will do is it will take them where they’re at this year, if they’re going into second grade now, it will take them from first to second grade. … Especially with teachers, that’s one of the best ones around.”

As some of the store's suppliers are also impacted by the coronavirus, Hensley recommended parents check the store's website at for what they want, then call Hensley at 937-294-1224 to check for availability and order over the phone.

The store will have limited hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday when Hensley will be available by phone to take orders. Hensley said when customers come to pick-up orders, he will place the order through the front door to comply with all social distancing orders.

Fun stickers, student award certificates, colorful pencils and other light-hearted supplies can also be purchased through the store to keep kids engaged and excited to return to school.
