Local students nominated to service academies

Four local students were honored by U.S. Sen. Rob Portman last weekend for their nominations to U.S. service academies.

* Abigail Arestides, a Chaminade Julienne student from Beavercreek, was nominated to the Air Force Academy.

* Nicholas Groene, an Alter High School student from Centerville, was nominated to the Naval Academy.

* Charles Lyon, a Miami Valley School student from Dayton was nominated to the Merchant Marine Academy.

* Tyler Long, a Beavercreek resident who attends Fishburne Military School in Virginia, was nominated to West Point.

“Our nominees are among the best and the brightest from Ohio, and I would be proud to have them serve our country in the military,” Portman said.

He added thanks to the Review Board that helped select the nominees, saying they are crucial to “Ohio’s strong tradition of high acceptance rates.”
