Beloved Oregon District business Heart Mercantile is expanding, moving

The co-owner of a Oregon District shop just let a very big cat out of the bag: her shop is moving and her business is growing.

Brittany Smith, a co-owner of Heart Mercantile, said she and her partners are moving a part of their boutique from 504 E. 5th St. in the Oregon District just a few doors down to 438 E. Fifth St., the former home of ReCreate Music.

Heart, which marked its second anniversary on Monday, Oct. 2, plans to open the new space on Friday, October 13.

The original location is currently open and many items are on sale, Smith said.

Smith and fellow owners Carly BarrettAmanda Hensler and Kait Gilcher will keep the space at 438 E. Fifth St.

Clothing, jewelry, bags and accessories will be sold from the original space.

“We are racking our brains (for a name). It will have the same setup as Heart,” Smith told us.

Smith said the new space will sell funny, Etsy and Dayton-centric products.

“The real reason we are moving is because of storage. At the current space, we have none. We are maxed out on what we can carry, and for things like the Dayton tees that we sell like crazy, we are constantly running out of sizes because we can’t keep much on hand,” Smith said via Facebook message. “The new spot has a huge, dry basement that changes the game for us. Now we can have a legit office and we can have so much more in back stock.”

She wrote about her adventures in small business on Facebook.

Love and small business have a lot in common, really. Much like falling in love, it happens suddenly, and in the matter of a day or moment, it becomes something so intertwined with your soul that you can't clearly remember life without it.
When you want something, you don't always see the work involved, which is probably for the best.
If you knew, you might run.
Instead, you take the risk, delve headfirst, give it everything you have, and then it becomes so much more.
More work.
More time.
Many more challenges.
And even more love.
