Blue Moon begins today; What is a Blue Moon?

This doesn’t mean that the moon will be blue, however. A Blue Moon’s name comes from its rarity.

There are two kinds of Blue Moons. A monthly Blue Moon happens when there is a second full moon in a month. A seasonal Blue Moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons, so four full moons that fall between the equinox and the solstice.

This weekend’s full moon is a seasonal Blue Moon. That means that this is the third full moon since the spring equinox. The first was March 20, and the fourth full moon before the summer solstice will be June 17.

Get outside and enjoy the big and bright moon! If clouds cooperate, you can also catch Jupiter shining steady near the moon.
