Dayton makes change after Google maps mix-up hurts business

The 300 block of North McGee Street has been renamed Roofers Way to help a business whose clientele and visitors often got lost trying to find its address using Google maps.

People searching for Noble Roofing Co. at 312 N. McGee St. in east Dayton usually are directed by Google maps to 312 N. James H. McGee Blvd., located about 20 minutes away in West Dayton.

Google maps assumes that users are looking for N. James H. McGee Boulevard because it is a heavily traveled road while the 300 block of N. McGee St. is home to just one property.

Jennifer Lawson, who worked for Noble Roofing for three years, said she often answered the phones and countless times customers and delivery workers said their GPS said they arrived at the destination but they could not find the business.

Lawson said it was extremely difficult to find the company and the address caused a lot of confusion and frustration. She said Noble’s stretch of McGee Street is little more than a “glorified” alley.

“We are kind of an orphan,” Lawson said. “We are part of N. McGee Street, however, our building literally sits in the middle of McGee Street, so it’s cut off into two sections.”

The Dayton City Commission unanimously approved an ordinance this week that makes the name change to Roofers Way.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said she is familiar with McGee Street and agreed that people get it confused with the much larger N. James H. McGee Boulevard.

”We’re grateful for small businesses thinking of ways to stay in Dayton and make it better,” she said.
