DeWine calls for moment of silence for George Floyd, cancels coronavirus briefing

Gov. Mike DeWine called for a moment of silence today at 2 p.m. in remembrance of George Floyd.

“The statewide moment of silence corresponds with the scheduled start of [Floyd’s] memorial service in Minneapolis,” he said.

The governor canceled today’s coronavirus briefing out of respect for Floyd’s memorial service.

The press briefing and memorial service were both scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

"Any updates for today will be released via press release and posted online at http://governor.ohio.gov and http://coronavirus.ohio.gov," the governor tweeted.

Four Minneapolis police officers are facing charges in Floyd’s death, including a second-degree murder charge for Derek Chauvin, the officer seen on video pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

DeWine called Floyd’s  death horrific and called for more training and accountability for officers.
