High wind gets blame for power outages, downed trees across Dayton region

UPDATE @ 9:00 p.m.:

High wind is causing more problems as the number of reported outages for DP&L customers has jumped to 5,438, according to the company's online outage page.

Steady high winds that have been in the region all day could begin to diminish overnight, but gusts of 35 to 40 mph will continue through about 2 a.m. Friday, Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs said.

DP&L spokeswoman Mary Ann Kabel said DP&L is encouraging people to be safe and to stay away from downed lines.

INITIAL REPORT

A strong storm system in the region this afternoon is responsible for the 2,621 reported outages Dayton Power & Light customers are experiencing, DP&L spokeswoman Mary Ann Kabel said.

At 5:30 p.m. the online DP&L map was showing outages scattered across the Dayton region. Here's the latest report:

* 1,108 in Greene County

*     664 in Montgomery

*     220 in Clinton

*    152 in Miami

*      87 in Warren

*        8 in Darke and Preble (4 each)

That strong storm system will bring wind gusts that could reach 50 mph this evening.

Kabel said DP&L crews are out at this hour addressing the outages.

There were reports of downed trees as well Thursday afternoon, according to regional dispatch:

* In Perry Twp., on Old Dayton and Crawford Toms Run roads

* In German Twp., in the 14,000 block of Kiefer Road

* In German Twp., on Jamaica and Upper Miamisburg roads. The tree reportedly is blocking the northbound lane.

* In Harrison Twp., on Bartley Road and North Dixie Drive

A wind advisory for the region remains in effect through Friday morning, our Storm Center 7 meteorologists report.
