After a lengthy rebuild and construction and insurance delays, the Dragon City restaurant at 1048 S. Smithville Road is serving customers again. It opened Tuesday in the Pinewood Plaza shopping center just north of U.S. 35, just around the corner from the state license bureau that is in the same strip retail center.

Jianming Cheng, Dragon City’s owner, said he is pleased and relieved to finally be back in business.

The fire started around midnight on Oct. 11, 2018, and was reported by a building security guard who noticed heavy smoke and flames. The fire is believed to have originated in or near the fryers, fire officials said at the time.

The fire prompted an outpouring of support from neighbors.

“I’m heartbroken and devastated that this has happened to them,” Dayton resident Donna Brooks told WHIO-TV NewsCenter 7 at the time. “I wanted to give them a hug and tell them I’m sorry for them and hope they can pick up all the pieces and do this again, because they’re wonderful.”

No one was injured in the fire.
