Longtime director out at embattled animal shelter

Mark Kumpf, the director of the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center, will no longer be employed by the county effective Dec. 14, according to a letter sent by County Administrator Michael Colbert to employees Monday afternoon.

“The Board of County Commissioners and the County Administrator desire to move forward with new leadership at the Animal Resource Center in order to implement recommendations of the recent external review,” Colbert’s letter reads.

Last week, Colbert named Bob Gruhl the interim administrator of operations for the shelter after the week before the county confirmed Kumpf to not be at work, having filed a workers’ compensation claim.

Consultants with Team Shelter USA recently reviewed the ARC operations but have yet to issue a final report on the facility often criticized by animal welfare advocates for euthanizing too many animals.
