When she finally rolled down the windows, the staff member could smell alcohol on the woman and took the child back inside the school.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue arrived at the school parking lot after the staff member called 911.
The woman tried to leave the parking lot and firefighters had to restrain the woman in the back seat of her vehicle, police said.
“When our deputies arrived they observed the woman had bloodshot/watery eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of intoxicants, but was able to talk to the deputies and answer questions,” the department said.
The woman was taken to a nearby precinct for a blood alcohol content test.
Her result of 0.466 percent was almost six times the legal limit, according to deputies. The woman was taken to a hospital, and she was later cited for DUI.
Deputies contacted her spouse, who is currently deployed overseas with the military, and were able to place her child with a family friend.
