New amphitheater under construction in Vandalia’s Art Park

A new theater that will be used for multiple purposes is coming to Vandalia in a multi-phase project.

An amphitheater is being built in the Vandalia Art Park, located on East Alkaline Springs Road. The project will take four phases to complete.

The first two phases, the stage and seating areas, will be completed this year. The last two stages, the overhead shelter for the stage and electricity service, will be completed once funds are found for construction.

“We are building it because our goal is to make the Art Park a community gathering place, and the amphitheater will give the park an amenity that can be used for any number of different types of performances,” said Communications Manager Rich Hopkins.

The structure will be used for mainly musical performances, but the city is exploring the idea of other types of performances that could be staged there.

The Vandalia Rotary Club purchased all the building materials, and R.B. Jergen’s Contractors are constructing it as a donation to the city.

“It’s extremely gratifying when a project gets this kind of community support,” Hopkins said.

Vandalia has not used any city funds to help with the construction.

The project is coordinated by the Public Art in Vandalia Committee and the Parks and Recreation Department.
