NEW DETAILS: West Carrollton sports complex with restaurant/bar delays opening

A multi-million dollar volleyball complex with a restaurant and bar in downtown West Carrollton is not expected to open on its target date this fall.

The 82,000 square foot indoor/outdoor facility targeted to be open Oct. 1 is now expected to open by November, officials said.

The developer for the $4.3 million project – to be called Miami Valley Sand – said a late start in construction due to the completion of real estate transactions has pushed the project back.

“We were thinking we were going to get started in March, but didn’t get started until May,” said Larry Roberts, who owns 50 percent of Spike-It LLC, which has a smaller facility in the Cincinnati area.

The city earlier this year approved a plan to sell land to Spike-It for the 6.6-acre site West Central Avenue.

Spike-It officials have said they expect the facility to draw between 300 and 500 a night and – during peak times of the year – employ as many as 50 people in the heart of downtown.

Miami Valley Sand will include 17 sand courts and more than 300 parking spaces, records show. The indoor facility would include 44,000 square feet, nine sand courts, a restaurant and bar, heat, fans, and 20 large garage doors to regulate the air flow, officials have said.

Outdoor facilities would feature eight sand courts, showers, restrooms, a bar with food service and a 36-foot wide deck, officials said.
