Fireworks canceled at New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in New Carlisle

UPDATED 12/31: The fireworks have been canceled due to the weather at tonight’s celebration in New Carlisle. The rest of the event will proceed as planned, according to organizers.

The ninth annual New Carlisle New Year’s Eve Ball Drop will welcome 2019.

The event returns beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, downtown.

Plans to add fireworks this year have been changed due to the weather.

The family-friendly event, presented by the Heritage of Flight Festival Committee, is free.

Extremely frigid temperatures a year ago caused the Ball Drop to be shortened to an hour. Committee president Mike Lowrey wanted to make up for the inconvenience with a big addition to this year’s festivities. However those plans were changed just today, Dec. 31, due to the forecast.

Another new feature is 150 wine glasses to be given away. A stack of tickets will be available at local businesses and attendees can sign up, and winning numbers will be drawn every 15 to 20 minutes.

Popular returning attractions include Rock on Ice’s ice sculpting demonstration and carriage rides from Willow Wind Carriage and Limousine Service. Both are free to experience.

There also will be food available for purchase and a DJ spinning music.

“We try to keep it inexpensive so people can have a good time,” said Lowrey.

The ball drop draws people from as far as Cincinnati and all over the area, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 people attending.
