“It sucks, but what are you going to do? You just gotta do what you gotta do,” said Tyler Mackey of Kettering.
Officials say gas costs almost $0.48 per gallon more this Labor Day weekend than last year and prices are averaging $2.80.
“There is a lot of people who can’t afford it,” said Chris Kinter of Kettering.
Prices could fall back into the range of $2.50 after the holiday weekend, experts say.
“It sky rocketed to $0.76 a gallon, and I felt like I was being ripped off at $0.76 a gallon,” said Kinter.
“I really try not to do anymore driving than I absolutely have to. I try to combine my trips, whether it is cheap or not,” he said.
The number of people in Ohio who travel for the holiday is up by more than eight percent, which also means people will be spending more on gas, according to AAA.
The average gas prices this year are roughly 48 percent higher than last year, with Ohio’s average at $2.80 a gallon, officials say.
AAA recommends planning ahead by looking up gas prices before leaving. They also suggest using your air conditioner conservatively and switching your car to the economy setting to burn less fuel.
