Must-see sights and sounds from Dayton street carnivals at the turn of the century

The bizarre and the whimsical can be found in captivating images and accounts of street carnivals that entertained the Gem City at the turn of the century. Here are three things to know about them.

1.Some say carnivals started here.  F.P. Sargent, a representative of the Gaskell-Mundy Carnival Co., claimed street carnivals originated in Dayton in 1899.

2.  Bathing beauties. Crowds crowded along the edges of the Miami and Erie Canal in downtown Dayton to watch elephants bathe.

3. Monkey feet. One of the early carnival attractions was "Wild Rose," who was describes as a "peculiar freak, about 15 years of age, perfect in stature, with the exception of the head and hands and feet which are those of a monkey."
