This season, the park will exhibit eight sculptures that are part of a traveling exhibit. The sculptures include almost life-size zebras, birds on an arch and an airplane that is close to the size of a dirt bike. The park will also display 34 selected works of art along the “Treble Clef Trail” from students at MVCTC.
The Vandalia Art Park’s former name was Lichtenfield Park, which was just a green grass area. It was named for Vandalia’s sister city in Lichtenfels, Germany.
In June 2014, the park’s name was changed to the Art Park. The park now has a walking path, permanent exhibits, trees, boulders and gravel for stormwater management. Plans are in the works for more improvements.
The park hosts travelling sculptures every year, with some that stay on a permanent basis at East Alkaline Springs Park, according to Communications Manager Rich Hopkins.
The official date for this year’s exhibit opens on June 2 at 1 p.m. with events for the family ongoing. The park is located on East Alkaline Springs Road, across from Vandalia-Butler High School.
