Man accused of killing toddler with hammer says 'government made me do it'

Yovahnis Fabian Roque, 26, of Orange, was arrested Tuesday and charged with capital murder, the Beaumont Enterprise reported. He is being held on a $2 million bond, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. If convicted, Roque could face life in prison or the death penalty, KFDM reported

Initially, police said the girl had been fatally stabbed, according to an Associated Press report.

During his court appearance Wednesday, Roque told Orange County Judge Courtney Arkeen "the government made me do it," the Star-Telegram reported.

"I've been out of my control for a very long time," Roque told the judge.

Roque has been in a wheelchair since he was seriously injured in a June 2016 wreck that killed the mother of the child, 24-year-old Rachel Foster, WTVJ reported. Some outlets incorrectly reported Foster's death on a South Florida expressway as occurring in 2017. Foster was killed weeks after giving birth to the girl, WTVJ reported.

"I've been doing this for 29 years and I'll be honest with you -- this is the worst case I've ever seen," Detective Robert Enmon told KFDM. "This has affected a lot of the officers. This is what you have nightmares over."
