17 children hospitalized after school bus flips on snowy Kansas Turnpike

A school bus carrying fifth-graders to a field trip Wednesday overturned on the Kansas Turnpike, injuring 17 children, authorities said.

Susan Arensman, a spokeswoman for Wichita Public Schools, said the bus was transporting students from Park Elementary School in Wichita to a field trip in Topeka, The Emporia Gazette reported. There were 36 children on the bus, along with two teachers, a chaperone and the bus driver, the newspaper reported.

Authorities said the 17 students taken to hospitals received minor injuries, according to the Gazette.

According to Lt. Dave Hundley of Kansas Highway Patrol, moderate snow was falling in the area at the time of the crash, KAKE reported. Hundley said the bus was traveling on a slushy roadway when it overturned into a ditch on the east side of the highway, the Gazette reported.

Students who were not injured were taken to Emporia High School, the newspaper reported.
