Dallas police arrest man in shooting, verbal assault on transgender woman

Authorities have arrested a man they claim has admitted to hurling slurs at a transgender woman before shooting her multiple times at a Dallas bus stop.

According to an affidavit, Domingo Ramirez-Cavente, 29, saw Rony Calderon walking in northwest Dallas Friday night and "began speaking derogatorily of gay and transgender people," WFAA reported.

Although Calderon, 35, walked away toward a nearby bus stop, the affidavit states Ramirez-Cavente then drove his truck to the bus stop and opened fire on the victim with a handgun.

KTVT reported Calderon underwent surgery after being shot multiple times in the chest and arm. Police told the station the shooting is being investigated as a hate crime, but as of Wednesday Ramirez-Cavente had only been charged with aggravated assault.

Investigators told WFAA Ramirez-Cavente waived his Miranda rights during his interview and admitted to shooting Calderon. He is being held on $25,000 bond, and Calderon remains hospitalized.
