Government investigates 12.3 million vehicles’ air bag controls

The federal government is taking a bigger look into air bag controls that may not allow the safety equipment to inflate in a crash.

Auto safety regulators are now looking at 12.3 million vehicles that use parts made by ZF-TRW in air bag controls and are malfunctioning, The Associated Press reported.

The vehicles, which were released in the 2010 to 2019 model years include:

  • Toyota.
  • Honda.
  • Kia.
  • Hyundai.
  • Mitsubishi
  • Fiat Chrysler.

Government documents uncovered cases where electrical signals can damage a circuit designed to monitor crash sensors.

There have been two serious crashes where the airbags did not inflate. The cars involved in the crashes were 2018 and 2019 Toyota Corollas. One person was killed according to the investigation, the AP reported. There was another investigation into Hyundais and Kias in 2017 where four people were killed.
