Indiana man fatally shot in Walmart parking lot in Muncie

An Indiana man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Walmart late Thursday in Muncie, authorities said.

Chase A. Woolums, 24, was found by police shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday, WTHR reported. Woolums was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, the television station reported. Woolums was taken to an area hospital, where he pronounced dead on arrival, The Star Press of Muncie reported.

Witnesses said the gunman was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup. Police later identified him as Justin Ryan Bennett, 31, of Yorktown, according to WTTV.

Bennett was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a violent felon, WXIN reported. A passenger in Bennett's vehicle, Hayle West, 21, of Muncie, was also questioned, the Star Press reported.

Bennett was convicted of aggravated battery in Cass County in 2006, the newspaper reported. He was convicted of driving while intoxicated last October in Delaware County

Muncie Deputy Police Chief Melissa Pease said the situation began when Woolums and Bennett, who had been having an ongoing dispute, agreed to meet in the Walmart parking lot to fight, the Star Press reported.
