Police arrest father in case where mother claimed son exposed to meth after trick-or-treating

An Ohio mother says her 5-year-old son was exposed to the dangerous drug methamphetamine after a night of trick-or-treating over the weekend.

Braylen Carwell was staying with his father in Galion, Ohio, when his mother, Julia Pence, got a call from a hospital 20 minutes away from her home in a nearby town.

Carwell told WBNS he started to shiver after going out to collect candy. Doctors said that he actually was having a seizure.

"And then I couldn't move my arm or fingers until I got to the doctor's and I was sitting for a little bit and then I could move my hand but not my fingers," Carwell told the television station.

Pence told WSYX, "The left side of his face was just droopy, and then he fell and then he couldn't move his left arm. And he didn't know where he was, he didn't know what he was doing."

Doctors tested the child, and his mother said those tests came back positive for methamphetamine, WBNS reported.

Carwell said he didn't eat any of the candy before he fell ill. The only thing he said he took from his candy collection was a pair of plastic vampire teeth he said he got trick-or-treating, WBNS reported.

His father, however, told police that the boy had a couple of pieces of candy and was playing with false teeth, WSYX reported police as saying.

"Right now, there's nothing specific," Galion Police Chief Brian Saterfield, told WSYX. "We need to narrow it down to see if there was in fact something that was tainted."

The teeth and the candy have been sent to police crime lab for testing.

WSYX reported that there were no other reports of possible tampering and they are continuing to investigate.

Meanwhile WBNS reported that Carwell's mother said both she and the boy's father are recovering from drug addiction, and that she has been clean for three years, but said Monday that there was no way that the meth came from any place other than trick-or-treating.

"I"m not covering up the truth," Powell told WBNS. "I'm just speaking the truth of what happened to my son, yesterday. Nobody in my family or [Braylen's] dad's family would drug my children."
