Photos of a winter weather phenomenon are turning heads on social media.

According to WXYZ and WDIV, the National Weather Service's office in Grand Rapids, Michigan, took to Twitter on Sunday to share snapshots of "ice volcanoes" at Oval Beach on Lake Michigan.

"It was a great day to visit the beach and watch the waves interact with the ice," the agency captioned one photo. "Here's a couple 'ice volcanoes' erupting at Oval Beach on Sunday, February 16, 2020."

In a second tweet, the agency added: "You never know what you'll find at the lake until you go out there. Today it was volcanoes. Here's a close up."

Ice volcanoes "form at the edge of ice shelves, as waves battle the shore, and force water up through cones of ice," WXYZ reported, citing the National Weather Service.
