Selling since 1932: 98-year-old Girl Scout continues to sell cookies

For Ronnie Backenstoe, Girl Scouts is a way of life and it has been part of it since 1932.

Backenstoe, who joined scouting when she was 10 years old in New York, is still active in Pennsylvania, donning her uniform, and selling Girl Scout Cookies with her fellow scouts, The Reading Eagle reported.

She started selling cookies when they were only 15 cents a box for the shortbread/Trefoils, according to the newspaper. Now cookies sell for about $5 or $6 a box, depending on the type, AZ Central reported earlier this year.

The Girl Scouts gave Backenstoe opportunities like a chance to see the world over the years, traveling not only across the country with her troops, but also Jamaica and Switzerland when she was a scoutmaster, WFMZ reported.

Life in the troop must have been fun for Backenstoe since she’s still sticking to it, but it wasn’t all easy she said.

"I don't know if you ever tried to get into a uniform in a pop tent. I did. It's not easy," she told WFMZ.

Her fellow scouts also love having her around.

"In general, she just makes me laugh when I'm with her," Senior Girl Scout Amber Holl told WFMZ.
