The Washington Post reported that in 2012, Trump didn't bid $12,000 of his own money for the helmet. The 2016 report said he used money from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, his nonprofit charity that was largely funded with other people's money. Trump won the helmet at the 30th anniversary gala of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The helmet, along with the remaining assets of the foundation, will be sold and proceeds will be donated following New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood's announcement that Trump agreed to shut down his foundation. The Tuesday announcement came amid allegations that Trump and his children used the foundation for their own profit.

It is not clear where the helmet is currently located, according to The Post.
