T. Boone Pickens, the 89-year-old oil tycoon and founder of Dallas-based BP Capital Management, has put his Mesa Vista Ranch up for sale.
The ranch, located 90 miles northeast of Amarillo, encompasses 101 square miles of mesas, and features rivers, man-made lakes and wildlife habitat.
"Selling the ranch is the prudent thing for an 89-year-old man to do," Pickens wrote on LinkedIn in the brochure announcing the sale Wednesday morning. "It's time to get my life and my affairs in order."
Pickens has cultivated and built on the ranch since 1971, starting with a heater so he could stay warm while quail hunting.
Later additions brought the ranch to the multimillion-dollar investment it is today. Now there’s a lodge compound, a lighted tennis court, a skeet/trap range, a small golf course with two fairways and greens and nine tee boxes, a 30-seat theater/media room, a two-story pub, a chapel, a dog kennel with enough room for 40 bird dogs, a lake house, a small Federal Aviation Authority approved airport and hangar, 400 cows and calves, farm machinery. The list goes on and on.
"The Mesa Vista has been a labor of love that has occupied the better part of my life. And I intend for a lot more good to come from the sale of the ranch," Pickens wrote.
