The explosion "obliterated" the house, Hardyston police Chief Bret Alemy told the North Jersey Record. said. Wallkill Valley Regional High School in Hardyston, located across the street from the home, will be closed until further notice, the newspaper reported.
No one was in the house when it exploded around 10:50 p.m., the Hardyston Fire Department told the Jefferson Chronicle. Aandrei Investors, LLC, an investment company formed in 2007, owned the large house on 33 Grumm Road, the newspaper reported. Representatives of the investors could not be reached for comment.
The Sussex County Prosecutors Office said it is looking into the above-ground propane tanks that were on the property, WABC reported. One tank was about 30 percent full and the other one was at 20 percent capacity, the television station reported.
Vibrations from the explosion could be felt from several towns in Essex County, the Chronicle reported.
