After a recent wave of closings that took the joy out of multiple openings, the Dayton-area restaurant scene tilted back toward the positive this week, with two openings and announcements of five more coming soon.
Here’s a wrapup of local restaurant news for the week of Oct. 8-14:
• The highly anticipated opening of the second location of Archer’s Tavern occurred on Monday, Oct. 10. at 2030 E. Dorothy Lane in a building had been vacant since Tumbleweed Southwest Grill closed in January 2014. It opens every day at 11 a.m., and stays open until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The new restaurant and pub seats about 200 and also has an enclosed patio that can be used year-round. It serves a variety of burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and salads.
• The Dayton area’s sixth Dunkin’ Donuts shop opened on Wednesday Oct. 12. The region’s newest doughnut shop is at 1310 Woodman Drive just south of Linden Avenue in Riverside. The 1,880-square-foot shop employs 45 and offers drive-through as well as dine-in service. It’s open daily from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• The developer of the Cornerstone of Centerville announced Thursday, Oct. 13 that four more restaurants will join the development. First Watch — the breakfast-and-lunch chain that operates three other Dayton-area locations — and Zoup!, which opened its first Dayton-area location next to Whole Foods in Washington Twp. last year, will join two other previously announced restaurant additions, a first-in-the-market MOD Pizza and Firehouse Subs, in the Shoppes at Cornerstone III. The retail building is now under construction along Wilmington Pike on the western edge of the Cornerstone development, with a projected completion by January 2017.
• The bar named “D20: A Bar with Characters,” under development at 2144 E. Whipp Road in the Oak Creek Plaza in south Kettering, last weekend set a tentative opening date of Dec. 2. D20 will offer board games and table-top gaming along with craft beers and other drinks.
• A spokesman for Logan’s Roadhouse — which shut down its Beavercreek restaurant near the Mall at Fairfield Commons just three weeks ago — told us earlier this week that the chain is poised to emerge from bankruptcy and vowed the two remaining Dayton-area locations will remain open. “Our restaurants in Troy and on Miamisburg-Centerville Road will remain open serving diners,” Logan’s spokesman Jonathan Dedmon told this news outlet via email. “Logan’s will remain a strong presence in Dayton.”
• And this almost counts as a restaurant opening, wouldn’t you agree? Voltzy’s Root Beer Stand — which had been shut down while owner Rick Volz recovered from surgery — reopened Tuesday, Oct. 11. Plans call for the shop to be open for lunch Tuesday through Thursday this week, and add Mondays in the weeks ahead.
• And just in case this election is driving you to drink, Crooked Handle Brewing Co. in Springboro on Tuesday launched an election-themed beer promotion that pits Deplorable Donald Foam-Over IPA against Crooked Hillary Rye Pale Ale.
Whichever candidate sells the most beer doesn’t win the contest. He or she loses. The unofficial name of the contest: “Make America Drink Again!”
