Sinclair’s summer class enrollment hits five-year high

Summer classes are underway at Sinclair Community College and the school is reporting its highest summer enrollment in half a decade.

More than 10,000 students are enrolled in the current summer session, which started Monday and ends on Aug. 5. The number of students enrolled this summer represents an 18 percent increase from last year and a five-year high, according to Sinclair.

While the number of traditional students enrolled in summer courses is up, the big jump appears to be mostly fueled by students involved in the state’s College Credit Plus program. The number of students enrolled in Sinclair classes through the program increased by 64 percent since last summer, according to the school.

College Credit Plus is a state program that allows students still in high school to earn college credit through courses at universities and community colleges, according to the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Sinclair is a popular destination for students looking to complete courses at a cheaper price over the summer. At just over $116 per credit hour for Montgomery County residents, Sinclair has one of the lowest tuition rates of any college in Ohio.

The five-year summer enrollment high is the latest success Sinclair is touting. Just a few weeks ago the school awarded a record number of degrees and certificates and closed a deal to buy and open a new learning center in Centerville.

“We are happy to begin our summer term and thrilled to have over 10,000 registered students,” Sinclair president Steve Johnson said in a prepared statement. “Sinclair is committed to student success by providing a variety of options to help meet the diverse needs of our students. We work continuously to help students get more education faster and for less money.”
