What’s going on with Crafted & Cured’s neighbors?

The District Provisions retail market at 521 Wayne Ave. is gearing up to open incrementally.

The buildup toward opening will start this Sunday, Oct. 22, with a “sneak-peek” event that a spokesman said will be mostly by invitation. It will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The tentative plan is to then open components of Glasz Bleu Oven, Jack Luckey’s Oyster Saloon & Caviar Bar and Local Hero Butchery & Fare starting about two weeks later, initially with Thursday-through Sunday hours and slowly ramping up to six-day-a-week service (closed Mondays), a spokesman for Coin & Hammer LLC, the corporation that owns District Provision, told this news outlet.

Glasz Bleu Oven hosted a dry run or sorts in May, and provided the venue for former Rue Dumaine co-owner Anne Kearney’s special “pop-up” dining event earlier this month. It will serve Mediterranean specialties such as Schwarma and hummus, as well as other dishes prepared in a wood-fired oven. Jack Lukey’s will feature three or four oysters from different parts of the country each day as well as seasonal fresh seafood, the spokesman said.

The new retail ventures are located in the Dietz Block building, built in 1886 at Wayne Avenue and Jones Street, next door to Wheat Penny restaurant. The building years ago housed Norman Miller & Sons Interiors. Crafted & Cured, a growler-fill craft beer and cured meats bar, opened last spring in the southeast end of the building, along Jones Street.

The District Provisions spokesman said the market is “designed and built to supply the primary daily grocery needs (provisions) to the residents of the Oregon District, South Park, St. Anne’s Hill and the downtown Dayton commuting customers,” providing organic produce, local and humanely raised meats, local dairy products, craft beer, imported wines, and unique household goods.

The business does have seating, but will not have table service. “We’re not a sit-down dining place,” the spokesman said. “We’re retail.”

The offerings will change frequently. “There is not a written menu, because everything will depend on what we’ve got that day,” the spokesman said.
