Happy National Waffle Day! Here at Dayton.com, we rarely meet a food holiday we don't like, and this is no different.

Before you roll your eyes at yet another food holiday, this one has some interesting history.

Waffle Day is a tradition celebrated in Sweden (and to less degree elsewhere) on March 25. They celebrate by eating (you guessed it) waffles. The name comes from Vårfrudagen ("Our Lady's Day"), which in vernacular Swedish sounds almost like Våffeldagen (waffle day). Our Lady's Day is celebrated on March 25, the Christian holiday of Annunciation, and the Waffle Day is celebrated on the same day. Of course, it has no religious connection.

Here are a few ways to celebrate in Dayton:

Hasty Tasty Pancake House: Located at 3509 Linden Avenue, this local biz is a favorite. Cozy atmosphere, good portions and good prices. Get a standard waffle or fancy it up with pecans or a fruit topping.

 >>

Golden Nugget Pancake House: This Dayton-famous 2932 S Dixie Dr. fixture has a variety of waffles -- Belgian-style waffles, blueberry or strawberry waffles, pecan waffles and (drumroll, please) bacon waffles. Yes, that's right -- BACON. Mmm.

 >>

Waffle House: Open 24 hours and with various locations in the Dayton area, you can get a waffle anytime: for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a midnight snack. Thinner than a Belgian waffle, and sorta crispy.

Make your ownBourbon-infused waffle with cinnamon whipped cream, anyone? Or maybe waffled oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies are more your speed.

In the United States, National Waffle Day is celebrated August 24, the date of a U.S. patent on a waffle iron. We say you should celebrate Waffle Day twice.
