Dayton Music Insider: Get your virtual lawn ticket during Art in the City

This weekend is one of the most exciting for Dayton arts and music fans because it’s First Friday and Art in the City on Saturday.

It’s still possible to experience live local music, even in the era of the coronavirus. Now music fans have the option of going to virtual or in-person shows, or both, depending on your comfort level.

Friday, Aug. 7

Saturday, Aug. 8

On Saturday, over 100 Dayton artists are participating in this year’s Virtual Art in the City, which will be held online, from noon to 8 p.m. at downtowndayton.org. The event will culminate with a virtual Levitt Pavilion “on YOUR lawn” performance with the local band Trey Stone and the Ringers at 7 p.m.

Cool, fun, and rootsy, Trey Stone & The Ringers are a veritable who’s-who of Dayton music. The band began when Trey moved to Dayton in 2011 and began performing his New Orleans-inspired originals at the venerated Canal Street Tavern.

From there members gathered, and the band is now a nine-member powerhouse, featuring players from several other well-known area groups, as well as current and former members of the Dayton Philharmonic and the Air Force Band of Flight.

The center of the band is Trey’s skilled piano, influenced heavily by Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, James Booker, and the other great piano professors of New Orleans. Backed up by the great rhythm players from the area, as well as a three-piece horn section, Trey sings both his many originals, and sprinkles in a few numbers from America’s rock-and-roll and R&B past.

Levitt encourages you to grab your chairs, picnic basket, cooler and computer or phone and head out to YOUR lawn. “Let’s build community through music right where we are,” the venue says. This video will be live-streamed on the Levitt Pavilion Dayton Facebook page at 7 p.m.

On Saturday evening, you’re invited to check out Dayton’s own Neo American Pioneers, on Saturday, Aug 8, live from The Yellow Cab Food Hub stage. David Payne will be kicking off the show with a solo set. Music starts at 8 p.m. with a $7 cover starting at 7 p.m.

If you’ve been yearning for a metal, hardcore show, Oddbody’s is planning to rock out to Trapt, Shades of Raven, Finding Atlas, Until the Dead Walk, and Password Reset. The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets $25-$30. Masks recommended, social distancing encouraged. Music 5 p.m. - 1 a.m.

Hank’s Pub in Kettering is also hosting live, original music on Saturday night, featuring Dazey Drive, The Mimics, Lucid Wasteland, and Davey’s Squires. $5 cover. 21+

If you do go to an in-person show, please wear a mask and stay 6-feet apart to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

As always, thank you for supporting local live music.
