Daytonians will recognize their own city and landmarks as the backdrop to a brand new music video that premiered at The Neon earlier this week.

There were nearly 40 entrees in the contest held by ruef Design, a local digital marketing agency, offering to produce, film and edit a music video for a local band or artist completely free of charge. It was a difficult decision, but in the end, ruef chose the indie-rock band Yuppie for their “combination of talent, creativity, and passion for the Dayton community, a passion which ruef shares.”

The song was recorded at Encore Recording Studios in Dayton and performed by the members of Yuppie — Zack Sliver, James Lampe, Zack Thompson and Bobby Tewksbury — and directed by Zack Ruef of ruef Design.

Starring in the video is Wright State University political science and law professor, Dr. Edward Fitzgerald, as he plays an adversary to Yuppie, aka, Zack Sliver. Fitzgerald interjects with a few lines between Sliver’s verses, antagonizing Sliver about his life choices and the path he’s on while pursuing a music career.

“I don’t know, I’ll find out, when I get there,” Sliver sings in the chorus in response to Fitzgerald’s jabs.

According to the band, “Get There” is about “how someone’s words can follow you throughout your life, taking on different forms, through different people and weigh on you,” posted Yuppie to the band’s Facebook page. “The choice is whether you listen to them, or strive to find where you belong in this weird place we all call ours.”

Yuppie’s music video for “Get There” premiered at The Neon movie theater in downtown Dayton on Sunday, and it’s now available to be heard and purchased everywhere on Spotify and Bandcamp.

Filming locations included Emerson Academy of Dayton, a tuition-free K-8 public charter school located in the historic former Dayton Public Schools building, AMG Engineering and Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken in North Dayton.

“Lee’s is a Dayton company, and we support Dayton arts and local musicians,” said Lee’s marketing director Andrea Newport. “We jumped at the chance to be involved in this music video project with ruef and Yuppie.”

The music video is available to watch on Yuppie’s Facebook page and on youtube.com.
