Dayton Beer Company to expand, add food service

The Dayton Beer Company (DBC) is expanding in part so it can add food service to its downtown Dayton brewery and tap room, the brewery's owners announced this morning.

The DBC will partner with the nearby Brixx Ice Co., 500 E. First St., to open the "2nd Street Pizza Company" at the brewery at 41 Madison St. off East Second Street. The new food service will specialize in pizzas, salads and subs, and it opens tomorrow, Friday Aug. 19.

The 2nd Street Pizza Company is part of a 3,500-square-foot expansion into an existing part of the building that formerly housed Weiler Welding. The added space will also include a merchandise store that will sell apparel, drinkware and DBC beers. The brewery also has added an outdoor bar and a separate entrance gate, as well as a new $25,000 walk-in cooler to accommodate expanded distribution and production needs, Dayton Beer Company founder Peter Hilgeman said.

Hilgeman said he and Brixx owner Chris Bhai “have always had great working relationship, so when the timing was right, it was a natural choice for Chris to create the menu and manage the food operations at DBC.

“Kitchen hours will be the same as brewery hours, so we are thrilled to offer our patrons the option to enjoy great food alongside their drinks anytime they visit DBC Downtown.”

The addition of food service “is another piece to the puzzle in completing our vision for the brewery,” Hilgeman said in a release.

Dayton Beer Company opened in 2012 as a microbrewery and tasting room at 912 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering before launching its much larger production brewery and tap room in downtown Dayton in April 2015 .
