Dayton-raised duo from ‘Minimalism’ documentary to speak at UD

The University of Dayton’s annual speaker series will kick off this fall by welcoming a Dayton-raised duo who star in the popular indie documentary, “Minimalism.”

The documentary, available to Netflix subscribers, revolves around helping people live more meaningful lives without clutter, according to the university.

Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, known as "The Minimalists," will speak at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 26 in the Kennedy Union ballroom. The two have been featured on the Today show, in Timemagazine, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and L.A. Weekly. They also have spoken at Harvard, Apple, SXSW and TEDx, according to UD.

The pair’s visit will be part of UD’s sustainability week programming.

UD will also welcome National Public Radio’s chief international editor for a speech later this fall.

William Dobson’s will give a lecture titled “Learning Curves of Dictators.” It is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Kennedy Union ballroom.

Dobson, a former visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, author of “The Dictator’s Learning Curve: Inside the Global Battle for Democracy,” and oversees global NPR correspondents who report on international politics, economic and cultural stories, according to UD.

The events for spring 2018 will be announced soon. Tickets are not required for Speaker Series lectures, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first served basis. Parking is available without a permit in B and C lots only.

“The mission of the series is to bring people to campus to talk about contemporary issues,” said Susan Wawrose, Speaker Series committee chair from UD’s school of law. “They’re inspirational. They’re pulled from the headlines, these are the newsmakers.”
