McIlroy, who shot a final-round 61 to win by seven shots at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, waved a Kyle Lowry Toronto Raptors jersey as he exited the 18th green, Golfweek reported. He also wore the jersey during his trophy presentation and received a loud cheer from the gallery, The Washington Post reported.

The Raptors, who lead the Golden State Warriors 3-1 in the NBA finals, are hoping to close out the best-of-seven series with a victory Monday night at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The Raptors are trying to become the first NBA team outside of the United States to win pro basketball's premier title.

McIlroy watched Game 2 of the finals in Toronto on June 2 and told Canadian Press he was impressed by the team and the crowd's enthusiasm.

"It was really cool to be there and be a part of and experience," McIlroy told reporters after playing in Wednesday's nine-hole pro am, which was held the day before the first round of the Canadian Open. "I’ve always had an appreciation for other athletes and it’s one of my favorite things to do is to go and watch other sporting events and see how other athletes handle their situations and pressures."
