After Democrats launched a sweeping investigation of President Donald Trump and the Trump organization last week in the U.S. House, the chamber’s top Democrat said she’s not in favor of impeaching the president.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told The Washington Post in an interview published Monday that while she believes Trump is not "fit" for office, she also believes impeachment proceedings against him would be too divisive, citing a lack of bipartisan support such a move.

“I'm not for impeachment,” Pelosi said.

“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he's just not worth it,” the California congresswoman said.

When asked whether she thought Trump has done anything that's good for the country in the two years he's been in office, she responded that he's helped her party's cause, according to the Post.

“He’s been a great organizer for Democrats, a great fundraiser for Democrats and a great mobilizer at the grassroots level for Democrats,” she said. “And I think that’s good for America.”

Pelosi also told the Post she's not anxious about where the country is right now, unlike many Americans, but slammed Trump in the process.

“Our country is great. It’s a great country. Our founders gave us the strongest foundation. … All the challenges we have faced, we can withstand anything. But maybe not two (Trump) terms. So we have to make sure that doesn’t happen,” she said.

Pelosi, who was first elected to Congress in 1987, spent the past eight years as the minority leader, won the leadership position again in January after Democrats took back the House in the 2018 elections.

She was also the House speaker during President Barack Obama’s first two years in office, before Republicans swept to victory in the 2010 elections.
