Police said the woman locked the children, a 4-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, in the garage, told them their mother would be home soon and left, WXYZ reported.

Regina Gittings, the children's mother, called police, who arrived at the home just before she did. Investigators found the frightened children in the garage and the boy was naked, WXYZ reported.

Gittings told the woman she was stuck in traffic and running late and would not be home at 5 p.m. The 29-year-old woman did not want to be charged for picking up her son late from day care and at 5 p.m. sent Gittings a text:

“I’m putting your kids in my garage now.”

Police said both children were exposed to potentially harmful items in the garage. The woman told investigators the garage was the safest place for her to leave them, WXYZ reported.

Authorities forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide on possible charges.

Gittings told WXYZ that she moved out with her children and moved to temporary housing for 30 days while she looks for a permanent place to live.
