The Harris County deputy, still wearing his uniform, spotted four men wearing hoods running around a Valero gas station at 11 p.m., KPRC reported. When he pulled over, the deputy said he noticed the store clerks with their hands up, backing away from the counter, the television station reported.
When the deputy pulled into the parking lot to investigate, he said two of the suspects ran past his vehicle toward a fence, KHOU reported. According to police, the deputy identified himself as a law enforcement official and pulled out his weapon, the television station reported.
The deputy then shot one suspect, who got away, KTRK reported. Authorities said the deputy detained another suspect, and the other two suspects left in a white Chevrolet Trailblazer where a fifth suspect was waiting, KHOU reported.
Authorities said the suspects who escaped took cash and cigarettes, the television station reported. The store clerks were not injured, authorities said.
