Based on Vance’s bestselling memoir, the movie is a modern exploration of the American dream and follows three generations of an Appalachian family as told by its youngest member, a Yale law student forced to return to his hometown.

Netflix won a “heated bidding war” to finance the $45 million feature, according to Variety.
The movie will reunite Close with Howard, who previously directed her in the “The Paper.”
Over the past several months, Howard has been seen around Middletown and has been a regular of sorts at the Triple Moon Coffee Company for coffee and vegetarian sandwiches.

Vance’s memoir (“Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis”) was a New York Times bestseller for 74 weeks. In the book, Vance writes about growing up in Middletown.
