The idea was submitted in August 2015 by Adrienne Vendetti and Stephanie Vendetti, sisters who co-founded the website How To Be a Redhead. The registrar at the National Day Calendar accepted the idea and decreed that the day would be celebrated annually on Nov. 5.

So if you have red hair, you can revel in your day, knowing that history has been full of men and women with fiery tresses. Prince Harry, Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I sported red locks. Several U.S. presidents had natural red hair -- some only in their youth, before politics turned them gray -- including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Rutherford B. Hayes and Calvin Coolidge.

Lucille Ball, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Nicole Kidman, Molly Ringwald, Axl Rose, Jessica Chastain, Geri Halliwell, Julia Roberts, Bette Midler, Reba McEntire and Ron Howard are some famous redheads, along with the ultimate Ginger, Tina Louise of “Gilligan’s Island” fame.

Even some animated figures are famous redheads, such as Ariel of “The Little Mermaid,” Jessica Rabbit. Princess Fiona from “Shrek,” Wilma and Pebbles Flintstone, Lois Griffin from “Family Guy,” Daphne Blake of “Scooby Doo” fame and Carmen Sandiego.

And don’t forget Annie from the “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip.
