The incident occurred at 7:40 p.m. at the College of the Mainland Law Enforcement Training Academy, the television station reported.

Officers said a cadet had a loaded handgun in his backpack, KPRC reported. When the cadet, Clayton Whatley, reached into his backpack, the gun discharged, hitting two cadets in their calves and grazing a third cadet, academy spokesman Cpl. Allen Bjerke told KHOU.

Two cadets -- a man and a woman -- were taken to an area hospital, KTRK reported. The third was treated at the scene.

None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening, Bjecke said.

Texas City police said no charges have been filed, but the investigation is still ongoing, KPRC reported.
