Get your everyday items ridiculously cheap at Mendelson’s

A common gripe among many Daytonians is the lack of affordable and/or accessible grocery options in the downtown area. Well, Mendelson’s Liquidation Outlet has taken a step toward fixing that.

The gargantuan outlet at 340 E. First St., which owner Sandy Mendelson calls “the first place to look for every last thing,” has been the local go-to stop for electronics, furniture, hardware and almost everything else under the sun at extremely low prices. Now, the retailer has brought out a line of nonperishable grocery items, from crackers to tomato sauce to bottled water to charcoal, with most items costing $2 or less.

“We’re trying to slowly widen our selection, to help service the new apartments and condos that are coming up here,” Mendelson said. Currently, the outlet is holding their biggest blow-out sale yet, with hundreds of clothing items, dishware, and more for $2 or less.

Perishable and frozen items aren’t on the horizon — “we’re not trying to become Kroger or Dorothy Lane Market,” he said — but at least those new downtown tenants along with current residents have one more place to grab some essential items. Here are some of the best deals on their new products you can find:

1. 1.5 liter water bottle for $1; 12-pack cases for $10.

It’s never too early to stock up for a natural disaster, plumbing disaster, or maybe you just need them for an outdoor event. Regardless, this is a steal.

2. Variety of hot sauces for 50 cents.

Nobody is trying to outdo Jungle Jim’s International Market on the hot sauce availability, but to save yourself a trip down south, Mendelson’s has over 10 brands and kinds of hot sauce for those who like it spicy.

3. Old-school Dayton Gems hockey gear for $2.

If you want to prove how deep your Gem City pride runs, or if you’re just a huge fan of hockey, this is for you. Mendelson’s bought up large quantities of Dayton Gems merchandise after the team ceased operations, and the gear for sale is just a fraction of the clothing section that will save you big bucks.

4. Restaurant-quality dishware for $2 and under.

Mendelson’s has supplied restaurant-grade appliances like stoves, walk-in freezers and fridges, and specialty gear for some time, but now on sale are rows and rows of matching plates, saucers, cups and more.

“If someone was trying to start up a restaurant, they could buy equipment, dishware, most of the things they need for a fraction of the price,” Mendelson said. The savings a fledgling business can benefit from here are nothing to scoff at.

5. A plethora of cracker and cookie products for $2 or less.

From Cheez-Its to Special K to Kashi bars, this is the place now to stock up on snack foods. We were sorely tempted by the $2 box of eight Rice Krispy Treats, but we held ourselves back.

6. Solid work shoes and scrubs for $2.

A number of industries that require plain black, comfortable work shoes, from restaurant and hospitality workers to masseuses, and they don’t run cheap. Usually. Until now.

7. Clearasil and Nivea products for $2 or less.

Beauty regimes very quickly dig a hole in your pocket, which is why the prospect of buying Clearasil face wash for $1.50 feels like Christmas come early. Mendelson’s also has towels and miscellaneous beauty and bathroom supplies at very low prices.

8. Refurbished 3-D printers.

Okay so these aren’t in stock yet, and no, they won’t be $2. But Mendelson ordered a number of 3-D printers to arrive soon, and will be added to the outlet’s already impressive array of printers and other computer supplies and electronics.

Grab all of these products before they sell out, and treat yourself to the unique experience of wandering through Mendelson’s. You won’t regret it.
