5 shining moments from Gem City Shine

Here are five of our favorite moments from Gem City Shine:

💎1. When Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said this:

Gem City Shine host Dave Chappelle, who talked between each act and also sang a couple songs, brought Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley on stage. She told the crowd that “Dayton changed the world once; we can change it again!”

💎2. Strangers paying it forward

Complete strangers were caught helping and showing love to other party goers throughout the night. Gem City Shine volunteer Paige Smith said so many times she had people at the drink tent where she was working offer to buy the drinks of the stranger in front or behind them in line.

This theme was witnessed throughout the night. Some party goers showed strangers they were there for them by just giving hugs freely whenever they saw it was needed.

💎3. Teyana Taylor brought daughter on stage to help her sing during memorial

R&B artist, Teyana Taylor, performed and danced with backup dancers and held her daughter in her arms as images of the victims from the Dayton shooting played on the big screens on the stage and on the corner of 5th and Wayne. She got emotional and cried while her daughter helped her sing into the microphone.

💎4. When Jon Stewart gave a shout-out to people watching from their apartment windows

Comedian and former host of “The Daily Show”Jon Stewart joined Dave Chappelle on stage to chat with the crowd between performances. He gave a shout-out to all the people watching with friends from their apartment windows on Wayne and the crowd really got into it as the people in the windows excitedly waved to Stewart and the crowd below.

People were spotted sitting on window ledges, feet dangling, some with drinks in hand and clearly enjoying their best seat in the house.

💎5. When party guests started picking up trash

When you have an event of Gem City Shine proportions, there is probably going to be some leftover trash from food and drinks. However, in keeping with the neighborly attitude of the day, party guests took it upon themselves to help pile and pick up garbage to make it easier for cleanup crews after the Gem City Shine block party.
