Yellow Gets Blue: Nasty Bingo hosts eclectic night of blues

While Blues ’n’ Brews was rebranded Yellow Gets Blue, Nasty Bingo’s annual event is still about promoting blues music and expanding genre expectations. The show, at Yellow Cab Tavern in Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 3, also features Sharon Lane, Cherry Lee & the Hot Rod Hounds and Wolf Moon Revival.

“There are a lot of Blues ’n’ Brews events out there, so we’re trying to separate it,” Nasty Bingo’s Matt Byanski said. “We’re also trying to give Yellow Cab a little bit more notoriety on it because they’ve supported us so much every time we’ve done it. It’s a great lineup of people so we’re excited.”

For this show folkadelic rock act Nasty Bingo — Byanski (vocals, harmonica, kazoo), Brian “Red” Baumgardner (guitar, banjo), Ron White (bass), Steve Phelps (drums, percussion, ukulele, guitar, vocals), Scott Givens (keyboards), Brian Spirk (mandolin) Khrys Blank (vocals, percussion) and Erich Reith (percussion) — will be focusing strictly on blues material.

“We do quite a bit of blues in our shows,” Byanski said. “We write our own songs, too, but we don’t write a ton of blues songs. It’s more folk and even pop or alternative so for us it’s nice to just be a blues band that night.”

Wolf Moon Revival is a newer group comprised of familiar faces: Joe Waters (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Eric Henry (guitar, slide, vocals), Brad Denson (bass, vocals) and Brandon Austin (drums, vocals).

“We like to have a blues act as a closer,” Byanski said. “Eric Henry has been involved the last few years with us and he has a new band with a really talented, young harmonica player named Joe Waters. They’re a good fit because everybody in the band knows them.”

Cherry Lee & the Hot Rod Hounds — Cassandra Barker (vocals), Kevin Schrimer (guitar), Casey Ott (guitar), Brian Hoeflich (upright bass) and Patrick Himes (drums) — is the rockabilly palate cleanser for the blues bill.

“We try to bring in a band that isn’t necessarily a blues band but can gravitate toward that,” Byanski said. “They have a lot of good blues players in Cherry Lee & the Hot Rod Hounds but they do a lot of rockabilly.”

Sharon Lane, known as Mama Blues, will also perform.

“We try to get Sharon every year,” Byanski said. “She couldn’t do it last year so we did have to make a substitution for her but she’s back. When you’re talking about music in this town, Sharon is a classic. She’s been doing it so long and she’s so great so you’ve got to have her.”
